Progress This Week

Teach 5 classes - I taught my first class this weekend. It went pretty well, but I only used up 20 minutes of my hour time slot. I need ideas for what to add to this class. This was Historical Research Methods.

Post 100 situations prompts to AO3 - I've posted another story.

Listen to 90 other podcasts - I listened to a freakonomics podcast about when helping is actually hurting. It had to do with mentoring kids one on one and how those kids went on to have universally worse outcomes than the kids who were not mentored.

Read the entire Bible - I'm in 1 Kings.

Go on a 30 minute poke walk 140 times - Went on another walk today. It was about 30 minutes, around Thrasher Park.

Go to the PSWC 140 times - I went to the HVN meeting today.

Scott's going to have to work Saturday. That kind of blows up our weekend plans, but the plant is doing full production that day, so everybody's working, no way around it. At least I can steal the equipment he'd been saving for the anomaly? (Definitely looking for a silver lining.)

We had a trial run this morning for how things will work in the fall, once school starts, because Cordelia had to catch a city bus at 7 a.m. in order to be at Skyline for an 8 a.m. orientation. I'm pretty sure I only got through it because I woke at 2:30 and took my thyroid medicine. If I don't wake to take it, I have to wait an hour and a half before I can eat or have my morning tea/coffee. Which would mean eating right at the point that I can actually go back to bed.

I have no idea how I'm going to make it through that time without sugar and caffeine. Scott has asked me not to discuss it because it upsets Cordelia to think that she's making things hard for me. I kind of want to snarl at him because that doesn't actually help me at all.

I'm kind of thinking that what ought to happen is for Scott to be the one to make Cordelia's breakfast since he'll be getting up at the same time she does. I'm not convinced that I need to be up to do that just so that he can sit on the couch and watch TV with her. (She needs the whole hour and a half to spin up and be functional. If someone doesn't put food in front of her, she won't eat.) I guess we'll see.

After Cordelia got on the bus, I took a walk. I walked very slowly for about an hour and a half. Then I went home and tried to get some things done. At about 10:30, I tried to nap, but I kept getting texts and phone calls. I did sleep some because I had kind of gripping dreams in between the texts. I figure I'm tired if I manage to out and out dream in a ten minute nap between text messages.

I need to find some space for myself in the next few days so that I can finish the fic that's due in early September. The problem is that I can't write it while Cordelia's home, so I may not actually have much time. She's volunteering most of next week, so maybe I'll have time then, but I also have doctor appointments in there and a bunch of other things that need doing while she's not at home. I don't know. I have 6000 words of story and something that would be an ending for any other exchange. I just haven't gotten what I need for this.

I'd normally ask Scott to get Cordelia out of the house, but I don't see that happening between now and the due date. There's just no way to make it work.

It's time for our regular reccer recruiting post, and to look ahead to the next month. So far we have TWO volunteer reccers who signed up for September with these fandoms:

* The Defenders ([personal profile] mific)
* Steven Universe ([personal profile] juniperphoenix)

So while we already have a few recs to look forward to in September, it would of course be awesome if we had some more recs. There is still plenty of opportunity for you to jump in and volunteer to rec next month (or to convince your friends to do some reccing). And many cheers for all of our members who volunteer to rec, especially if you rec regularly. Your valiant repeat efforts keep the comm alive.

Looking even further ahead so far only ONE reccer has volunteered for October, so that month definitely still needs some love (and recs! *g*) too. So please consider reccing in a fandom of your choice, whether small or huge, and comment on the sign-up post and volunteer for September, October or even further ahead if you are so well organized, that you know your fannish interests and time commitments in advance. It's only four recs as a minimum, and you can rec any genre or rating. Or promote us to your friends or in your favorite communities so others do the work.

Open Rec Posting

The monthly open reccing period for all members starts now and lasts until the end of August. Since the general prompts don't seem to work as inspiration, I've decided to stop adding them, but to keep the open reccing period in case anyone wants to slip a rec in, without having to come up with three others for a fandom. However the recs do still have to conform to the usual rec format and follow the rules for what is allowed to be recced here.

(Comments here are disabled, because I want to bundle volunteering in the sign-up post so that nothing gets lost, and you can see the list of claimed slots there too.)

Wednesday - What You Reading?

I'm feeling bleh and rather under the weather today. Not sure the problem, but yeah.

Anyway, lotsa reading this week:
First up Beyond Belief: My Secret Life Inside Scientology and My Harrowing Escape by Jenna Miscavige Hill.

I’m trying to read all the stuff I can about Scientology as it just fascinates me in the same way a train wreck would, I can’t look away. I’m dutifully watching “Aftermath” and I check out Mike Rinder’s blog daily. I don’t want to say too much as I don’t want to offend anyone, but…man. Just. Man.

Next up, something completely different: Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. I’m pretty hip to the Greek and Roman mythology, but Norse was a different story. I find I knew more than I thought, but not as much as I could. The language was a bit tough to follow and I found myself just skipping over the names/words I couldn’t pronounce. Heck, even the ones I could I probably was doing incorrectly! It was a fast, fun read about the Norse myths and I liked putting together how they are used in our culture.

I’m not a cookbook person, but I do love me some Alton Brown. When I saw this pop up on my digital list, I had to check it out: Alton Brown Everyday Cook This time, it's personal by Alton Brown. He is one dry, funny guy. I find his recipes to be a bit…cumbersome. But that’s all on me. I do use some of his recipes, but I doubt I’ll use any of these. It was just fun to read. I like a man with passion!

There are a few classics that I’m trying to read and this is one: Peter Pan by JM Barrie. I think, if you are of a certain age, we all remember the Disney cartoon version. There is “Finding Neverland” and “Hook”. Now I get it. It always amazes me, the language used in a “children’s book” . I wish books today used such language!

I’ve read The 19th Wife and I being as I live very close to SLC and there is a large Mormon community here, I’m interested in this whole plural marriage thing. Strictly academically, of course. I don’t share. Just sayin’. Sister Wife by Shelley Hrdlitschka felt as though it was written to a younger audience. YA maybe? I did like how it juxtaposed the inuksuk idea of balance with the balancing act these young (very young!) women have to go through. Worth a read.

I'm currently reading Karma for Beginners by Jessica Blank. I'm only a few chapters in, but it's very crunchy-granola in a weird way.
